Team
History
The CNU Ice Hockey club was
formed in the fall of 2004 by current team members Colin McCarthy, Ryan Pringle, and Bryan Trumble. McCarthy and Pringle were
teammates from the Hampton Roads Hurricanes, a team comprised of students
from Christopher Newport and ODU. The BRHC decided that the team had to
split for the 2004/2005 season, and the CNU team was started shortly after.
In the first season, the team played only 9 games and posted a record of
1-7-1, with their first and only win over UNC-Charlotte in overtime.
The 2005/2006 season was one of
impressive growth for the Captains. In August of 2005, CNU was accepted as
an affiliate member into the BRHC. The team played a 17-game schedule,
improving to a record of 7-8-2, with an impressive second semester record
of 4-1. The team’s success in its second year was greatly due to a strong
freshman class and the leadership and talent of key players like assistant
captain Mark Wilkinson and goalie Ryan Pringle, who were both voted to the
All-Conference team at the end of the season. Some highlights from the
05/06 season include a big win over the eventual league champion, the
University of Richmond, and an exciting game against William and Mary at
the Norfolk Scope, home to the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals.
Now a full member of the BRHC, the 2006/2007 squad continues to take
steps towards becoming the best team in the league. With much of the core
talent returning and another strong freshman class, the team is confident
that they will be a fierce competitor within the BRHC. On offense, the
league’s leading scorer from last season, Mark Wilkinson, will lead the
forwards and plans to give goalies nightmares. Alex Pringle will make the
Captains strong in goal with senior Captain Colin McCarthy leading a young
but solid defensive corps that can handle any attack thrown at them. Behind
the bench is the team’s new Head Coach, Tom Quigley, who brings over 25
years of coaching experience and the motivation and leadership that will
lead the Captains to many victories this season and beyond.
