The Ecology Club at Christopher Newport University:

  • actively educates the CNU community of important environmental issues

  • encourages students and the community to recognize their role in helping the environment

  • strives to make the CNU campus more environmentally friendly and helps shape future generations of environmentally responsible citizens.

The idea for the Ecology Club at Christopher Newport University was originally established as the Recycling and Environmental Committee under the Biology Club from Fall 2002 through Spring 2003. However, starting Fall 2003 through Spring 2004 was the first year the official club was founded. The club founder was Nelson Torres who is a CNU Alum who graduated in 2006. Nelson majored in Environmental Science and received his master’s degree.

The current faculty advisor of the Ecology Club is Dr. Anne Perkins. Dr. Perkins says this of the Ecology Club, “I became advisor of the Ecology Club because I wanted to support Nelson Torres, club founder, in his endeavors to make CNU a more ecologically conscious campus. Since that time, I have watched the club grow in numbers and scope. I continue to serve as advisor because of the commitment and maturity of the club's leadership and the strength of its membership.”
