Alpha Phi Omega at Christopher Newport University started with Rob Collings, a brother from the Alpha Gamma Omega chapter at University of Texas - San Antonio, and Beth Herrmann, a brother from the Alpha Delta Delta chapter at George Mason University.  After making contact with National Office, we were recognized as an interest group on February 14, 1994.  Our first petitioning ceremony was held in Christopher Newport Hall (now known as McMurran Hall) on April 24, 1995.  Despite many officer turnovers and the loss of Rob Collings for personal reasons, the chapter survived with a strengthened service program.  At the time of chapter charting, our brothers had completed over 1,700 hours worth of service to the Nation, Community, Campus and Members.

A few months before our chapter was scheduled to be chartered, our chartering kit was lost in a house fire.  Support first surrounded Beth Herrmann who lost her house and everything in it, and the chartering kit second.  With the help of section and region staff, we were able to bypass submitting a chartering kit for the time being and were chartered as originally planned on April 16, 1996.  We are the only chapter that has not submitted the complete chartering kit to National Office.
